President Obama is right in saying that the solution to America’s serious energy insecurity is “all-of-the-above.” Yet, he seems to favor only some of the options, for example, less intensified extraction of American natural resources and more investment in fuel-efficient cars and alternative, green technologies.
One extremely promising option seems missing altogether from this menu. America has immense reserves of natural gas. Currently, so much gas is coming on-line that its price is extremely low.
Consequently, we can quickly and inexpensively produce large quantities of a liquid derivative known as methanol that can be used in many late model cars with very minor modifications. This would offer American drivers fuel choice and help end OPEC’s oil monopoly. Let’s make methanol part of a bipartisan and truly all-of-the-above strategy for energy security.
