Next week, President Obama and roughly fifty of his counterparts from around the world are to meet in Seoul, South Korea to talk about a very serious problem: loose nukes.
There’s a lot of material from which nuclear weapons or simpler “dirty bombs” could be fashioned and not all of it is rigorously controlled. What’s more, terrorist groups could get their hands on an actual weapon from, say the former Soviet Union’s still- inadequately secured stockpile.
Unfortunately, Mr. Obama and the so-called “Global Zero” movement seem to think that the way to address these threats is to denuclearize the United States. That won’t prevent a single unsecure nuke from getting loose. It will just mean that we will greatly increase the incentives to others to get their hands on the Bomb.
