Tomorrow, the Obama administration will begin pressing the United States Senate to approve a treaty Ronald Reagan rejected thirty years ago. Unfortunately, the Law of the Sea Treaty, or LOST, has not improved with age.
When Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and Joint Chiefs Chairman General Martin Dempsey testify, Senators will be told this accord has been fixed since Reagan’s day, is necessary for our security and will enhance our sovereignty. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
As things stand now, critics willing and able to tell that truth have not been invited to testify. Team Obama seems determined to reduce the Senate to a rubber stamp – as it did with the New START Treaty in 2010. Such a process simply underscores the unacceptability of LOST.
