Thirty-one female recruits at Lackland Air Force Base have allegedly been raped or otherwise sexually abused by male trainers. A court martial in one case is just getting underway, but the Pentagon insists that this scandal is an anomaly, not symptomatic of a larger problem.
Certainly, most trainers and other service personnel do not engage in predatory sexual behavior. We shouldn’t kid ourselves, though: If mixed sexes are placed in military settings with little or no privacy, there will be problems with pregnancies, rapes, crimes of passion and broken marriages.
How much command time, energy and defense resources are currently being diverted to contending with such problems? What is certain is more of all those will be squandered as the armed forces are used for societal experimentation, not defending the nation.
