The House of Representatives felt compelled yesterday to urge the State Department to declare the Haqqani Network a designated terrorist organization. That should be a no-brainer: Haqqani is, after all, an Islamic supremacist group that kills American soldiers and innocent civilians in Afghanistan.
While State is at it, they should also designate the Muslim Brotherhood a foreign terrorist organization. The Brotherhood’s Palestinian franchise, Hamas, already has that dubious distinction. And the rising danger posed by the Brothers to stability, to U.S. allies and to our interests – throughout the Middle East and beyond – fully justifies such a blacklisting.
Don’t hold your breath, though, if it left up to the Obama administration. It wants to engage the Muslim Brotherhood, not take it down. That means it’s time for Congress to act, again.
