Suddenly, everybody’s talking about Bashir Assad’s chemical weapons and the threat they pose to the Syrian people, to Israel and perhaps to the rest of us – especially if the opposition’s Muslim Brotherhood and al Qaeda elements inherit them.
President Obama yesterday warned Assad that he would be “held accountable” should Syria employ its lethal chemical agents. But the question occurs: Wouldn’t that threat be more persuasive if the U.S. had an in-kind deterrent of its own chemical weapons?
We don’t, of course, thanks to a 1992 treaty that was supposed to rid the world of these things but only eliminated ours and those of other law-abiding nations. Even though the planet is more dangerous, not less, Mr. Obama now proposes to do the same with our nuclear deterrent. Thanks, but no thanks!
