Rumor has it that the Russians are bailing out on Syrian dictator Bashir Assad. This is an important straw in the wind since Russian President Vladimir Putin has been one of Assad’s most aggressive defenders.
By casting vetoes at the United Nations and inserting naval forces at a Syrian base in the eastern Mediterranean, Putin has stood with, and protected, Assad. Those units are reportedly pulling out, possibly clearing the way for the Obama administration to become more directly engaged in the intensifying war to overthrow another despot it once courted.
This could get really messy. The various alternatives – virtually all of whom are hostile to us, the infusion of ever-increasing armaments and the possibility that chemical or biological weapons will be unleashed may leave us nostalgic for Assad and his Russian friends.
