The moderator, Jim Lehrer of PBS, deserves credit, too. There were none of the journalists’ seemingly self-promoting and intrusive “gotcha” questions so common in past presidential debates. Lehrer allowed the candidates to go at it, guiding the conversation without getting in the way.
A format that lets the presidential contenders actually debate one another may be a novel concept for American politics. But it should be used much more often if the purpose is to
inform the voters – and give them a reason to vote.
