Last week, General David Petraeus confessed to an extramarital affair. It may have begun when he was the top commander in Afghanistan. Today, his successor, General John Allen, is under scrutiny – reportedly for a relationship with a woman who, it happens, precipitated the investigation of then- CIA Director Petraeus.
The question occurs: Is the behavior of these senior officers the exception? Or are we seeing in their conduct evidence that the culture of the military is showing the effects of the social experimentation designed to make it more like our ever-more-libertine civilian society?
The hard truth is that we need the U.S. military to maintain the high standard of integrity and discipline that has helped it become the best fighting force in the world, and the most admired institution in the country.
