There's a certain irony to the fact that Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez is dying of some form of cancer. After all, his regime and cult of personality known as Chavismo have been a kind of strategic cancer in Latin America for over a decade.
Chavez has instituted a communist economic program, principally benefiting his cronies, Cuba's Castro brothers and the Chinese. He has relied on a Cuban-supplied security apparatus, Russian weapons imports, narco-trafficking and virulent anti-Americanism to maintain control at home and expand his influence in the region. Hugo Chavez's apparently imminent death is an incredibly important opportunity to end this mortal peril to freedom in Latin America. Will President Obama -- who has said he does not consider Chavez a threat -- miss this chance, and thereby help perpetuate that threat? This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
