In eight hours of testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee, he dissembled, stumbled and outright lied about his record, views and policy judgment. As Senator Jim Inhofe, the Committee's ranking Republican, observed: The world is much too dangerous a place at the moment to entrust the Pentagon to such a seriously flawed leader. Virtually every other GOP Senator seems likely to concur.
The question now is whether Senate Democrats will act in the national interest or defer blindly to President Obama. They'll be under intense pressure to toe the party line. But Mr. Obama can come up with a better candidate for Defense Secretary and his partisans in the Senate must insist that he do so.
