Advertisers pay millions for the chance to reach a global audience for even a few seconds during the Super Bowl. The value of the thirty-five minutes in which the New Orleans Superdome was partially blacked-out, however, could be literally priceless.

We shouldn’t need it after the devastating and widespread black-outs caused by Hurricanes Sandy and New Orleans’ own Katrina. But we still haven’t taken the steps necessary to protect our electrical grid against natural disasters, or crippling man-caused cyberwarfare or electro-magnetic pulse attacks.
Fortunately, the lights came back on eventually last night. If we act now, we can harden the grid – and ensure they don’t go out for America permanently.
