Several Senate Republicans yesterday joined the rest of the GOP caucus in opposing a vote on the nomination of Secretary of Defense-designate Chuck Hagel, but announced they would permit such a vote in ten day's time. In light of the serious and proliferating reasons to block this appointment, such a delay - while welcome - is not good enough.
For example, just yesterday the Washington Free Beacon uncovered one of the speeches that Hagel seems determined to hide from the Senate. In an address at Rutgers University, he reportedly declared that the State Department has become an "adjunct to the Israeli foreign minister's office."
Senators like John McCain and Lindsay Graham must not allow the confirmation of a nominee with a record of unhinged, reckless and anti-Israel sentiments. Not in ten days. Not ever.
