Abraham Maslow, the Humanistic Psychologist, proposed that we are motivated by a hierarchy of needs. ----more----
This is basically a way to say that we have a variety of needs that motivate us.
What motivates us most is likely to drive our choices and behaviors.
One of the reasons I like to think so much is because by thinking, I can choose actions that will satisfy a wider variety of my needs simultaneously than if I just choose based on instinct.
To me, that’s the definition of success and am very satisfied when I can accomplish that.
I think the same goes for good leaders. Good leaders are those who can help their employees align their needs with the needs of the larger group.
So stop thinking of needs in an either or sort of way and start thinking how to satisfy multiple needs at once.
