The team to beat in 1934 were the reigning premiers, South Melbourne or as some called them, The Foreign Legion, with their team of talented imports, taking the flag from Richmond in 1933.
Other teams started to employ a similar tactic to build their teams up.
Richmond got off to a flyer, looking very dangerous, while South’s form was actually up and down. Collingwood was back near the top with an injection of youth. North Melbourne’s optimism doesn’t last long, and Footscray’s coach finds himself in an interesting predicament. The Brownlow race ends in interesting circumstances and Carlton and Collingwood revisit the animosity of the 1910 grand Final.
