Transition is not easy for anyone, but it could be more challenging for gifted individuals. Welcome to another episode of Someone Get's Me Podcast. Today's conversation is with Dianne's friend Julie Postma. Get ready to listen to some great tips on how to deal with change and transition.
Julie shares how she grew up as an only child in a single-mom home and had no easy time with it. As a latchkey kid, she learned from an early age that it was a lot about survival and that you often did not have many options in life.
Julie was fortunate to have had a strong influence from great teachers who "got her." They saw something in her that she didn't know she had. One particularly influential teacher helped her build self-confidence. This allowed her to attend college and become the first person in her family to earn a degree.
While raising her daughter Nikki, she met her husband Mike in Mexico, and after a six-month courtship, they married. Throughout their 27-year marriage, they raised Nikki and three additional exceptional children in a blended family home.
Their now young adult children learned valuable skills and assets due to learning to deal with the transition and change. One of these skills was learning to step out of their comfort zone, find meaningful connections, and know that their family was safe.
Key points covered in this episode:
Julie Postma is an advocate, speaker, writer, co-founder, and Chief Marketing and Operating Officer at Gifted and Thriving, LLC, an organization that provides education, consulting, and services to the gifted and twice-exceptional (2e) communities. Together with her husband, Dr. Michael Postma, an educator and leader in the gifted and 2e education community for over two decades, they have raised four gifted children, three of whom are twice exceptional.
Overall, Julie encourages you to be "real" and be okay with being who you are designed to be. Connect with Julie at www.giftedandthriving.com
