I shall be giving a testimony of my own path to born-again belief. Weaving my own life story with the sweeping biblical narrative and drawing on the symbolic meanings of scripture to a contemporary context, I will illustrate how my own road to conversion is born from seeing how the bible is a unified story that ultimately leads to Jesus as king and savior of the world.
Having recently graduated from university, and now pursuing a path with Uniting church that may lead to a ministry vocation, I am growing in my conviction the necessity for those both within and outside the church to understand the Christian faith, worldview, and the bible in a new and sober light.
I have come to see the bible not solely as law-code, wisdom literature, myth, or historical text, but ultimately as narrative. I have a personal and deep passion for storytelling in all its forms, and my tertiary studies in English and the humanities illuminated me on the grand narratives that dictate human societies throughout history. This, paired with the rising scholarship in church academics concerning theology, history and literary study has culminated for me to see the bible as the ultimate narrative. The place, to quote C.S. Lewis, where myth becomes fact. Where beauty and truth, justice and mercy converge.
I hope to illustrate in my talk how the bible provides a map of meaning to life, with deep and powerful truths that have echoed through the foundations of world history, and how that story continues to this day and invites each one of us to partake in God’s plan for universal and cosmic co-creation of a renewed heaven and new earth. A story of how God became King, and how that royal revolution and great commission still applies to the us and the world today.
