The Iranian people who have for nearly forty years been compelled to shout “Death to America” are in the streets demanding “Death to the dictator.” Now that they finally have a U.S. president who is on their side, an end to the oppression may be at hand.
Donald Trump has gone beyond merely expressing support for the long-suffering people of Iran. At midnight, the President reinstated sanctions that Barack Obama recklessly waived as part of his sell-out Obamabomb deal with the mullahs.
Mr. Trump has, moreover, created real costs for the Europeans should they try to ignore our sanctions in order to prop up the Iranian dictatorship.
We’re told the object of such important policy changes is merely to change that regime’s behavior. But the Trump administration’s actions seem likely, if not calculated, to help Iranians instead change the regime itself.
