Happy New Year to my listeners, and welcome to 2021 where we can all have 2020 hindsight.
In this episode I introduce a new series on the benefits and risks of artificial intelligence. I provide an introduction to my current (limited) understanding of AI. Together we will learn more about this amazing technology. We will interview experts and find out where they think AI will take society. The benefits of AI seem clear. Driverless cars, personal assistants like Alexa and Siri, expert systems able to beat the world's best chess players or diagnose illnesses--all seem poised to improve our lives in many ways.
Any sufficiently powerful tool, however, also comes with inherent risks. What could be the problem with super-intelligent artificial systems you ask? Let's ask the experts if the scenarios popularized by Hollywood thrillers such as Robocop or Terminator are just fiction, or potential documentaries. Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk have both published worrisome warnings that AI is dangerous and needs to be treated with care. Please have a listen and let's find out about the ethics of AI.
