Host Bart Zandbergen welcomed Will and Courtney Alovis of Balboa Island’s iconic Sugar ‘n Spice into the studio. The dynamic duo spent decades on set in Hollywood working on some of the most notorious TV and movie sets. Courtney Alovis dedicated nearly 25 years in Hollywood glamming up TV stars, models and movie moguls such as Donny Osmond (she was his personal makeup artist for 7 years) Greg Kinnear, Brooklyn Decker, Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, and Shannon Elizabeth. Not to mention she was an in-demand makeup artist for popular shows like The Voice, General Hospital, Days of Our Lives, and various other shows on ABC, NBC, and CBS. Will Alovis spent 30 years in the entertainment industry, 15 of them script supervising for award winning shows like Empire, CSI Miami, CSI New York, Bones and Law and Order Special Victims Unit. However, when Courtney’s mom – who owned Balboa Island’s beloved Sugar ‘n Spice- was diagnosed with a terminal illness, the couple left Hollywood and set out for Orange County. Today, they are more excited than ever to be at the helm of the original frozen banana shop and are celebrating the shop’s 75th Anniversary this year.
In this episode, learn:
-How Will and Courtney transitioned from Hollywood to Balboa Island, and how they now get to be involved with shows like Blackish and Grownish
-How the couple channeled their entrepreneurial spirit to develop and launch the catering truck side of the business for Sugar ‘n Spice
-What some of their biggest learning lessons were going from employee status to employer status
-What Sugar ‘n Spice has planned for a special roll-back day in March, and what sweet treats patrons will have access to at yester-year pricing
When asked what their ultimate lessons learned were, Courtney shared that she focuses on trying to unlearn what she has learned, so that she can evolve. She tries to be open to new and creative ways of doing things. Will shared that his ultimate lesson learned has been that it is never too late to start something new. He believes you are always able to make different choices to build the life you have always wanted.
