A lifetime ago, I had the privilege of working in the United States Senate for a great Democratic legislator, Senator Henry “Scoop” Jackson. He is spinning in his grave today at a very high RPM.
Scoop was a patriot committed to the national security approach Ronald Reagan called “peace through strength” long before Mr. Reagan entered the White House. He was also a fierce champion of the Senate’s constitutional roles and duties. He didn’t hesitate to stand up to – and defeat – a president of his own party who made reckless deals with our enemies.
Scoop Jackson would be appalled that forty-two Senate Democrats yesterday prevented even a vote on such a deal, just to protect Barack Obama from the overwhelming, bipartisan repudiation his Obamabomb accord requires. They must be repudiated, and held accountable.
