Americans Harvey Alter and Charles Rice with Briton Michael Houghton won the Nobel Prize in Medicine  for discovering the Hepatitis C virus. This has an Indian dimension. The Nobel Prize for Chemistry was shared, for the first time, by two women — Emmanuelle Charpentier of France, and American Jennifer Doudna for inventing a ‘scissors’ which allows scientists to ‘cut-paste’ inside a genetic sequence.
