On Wednesday, July 3rd, Deacon Mike Beauvais spoke with Timothy Gordon about his book, Catholic Republic: Why America Will Perish Without Rome. Gordon says the book was inspired by his time in studying philosophy in Rome and then returning to law school in the States. Catholic Republic is anchored in a three-pronged definition of what the author names the “Catholic Natural Law”: 1) Nature as moral and free, 2) Nature as intelligible, and 3) Nature as purpose-oriented. It is on this natural law tradition that all republics, especially the United States, are based, but according to Gordon, the country’s Protestant and Enlightenment architects either unwittingly plagiarized or deliberately distorted numerous Catholic Natural Law principles as they gave shape to the new nation in the Declaration of Independence and the federal Constitution. Dcn. Mike and Timothy also discuss why the rejection of these three principles are dangerous for the continuation of our Republic. For example, in Gordon’s eyes the doctrine of federalism is actually a misconstrued application of the Catholic principle of subsidiarity. If you are interested in the American Founding or have always wondered about the role of Catholicism in the origins of our country, you will enjoy this episode and want to read this compelling book.
