75% of crimes not reported – Commissioner McGrath

The rights and protection of victims of crime in Ireland and throughout the EU can and should be strengthened. That’s according to Ireland’s new EU Commissioner, Michael McGrath who’s responsible for criminal justice in the bloc. The European Commission is proposing revising the 2015 Victims’ Rights Directive. It wants to upgrade the minimum standards of victims’ rights across the EU and has identified five areas that need to be strengthened when applying the law.

Commissioner McGrath says it’s tragic that many crimes are not reported to the police because people don’t have confidence in the justice system. Today is European Day for Victims of Crime.
