Government is set to force city councillors to row back on a raft of zoning decisions made in the Galway City Development Plan.

The alterations were approved by a majority of councillors to allow certain parcels of land to be changed from recreational or amenity to residential use.

In most cases, the designations were voted through against the advice of city planners.

But the Office of the Planning Regulator has now written to Minister for Local Government, Peter Burke.

It says that 26 of those decisions are not conforming to good planning or national guidelines - and should be reversed.

Green party Councillor Niall Murphy says it's important that we're developing housing in a sustainable manner.
