Pure Science: Dire wolves, made popular by Game of Thrones, were genetically different from wolves

The dire wolf went extinct around 13,000 years ago to 10,000 years ago. Their genome was sequenced for the first time and findings last week revealed that they genetically diverged from the wolf more than 5.7 million years ago, making them a different genus instead of a different species of the same genus.
