principles of interpretation:
The main intent of the Mosaic Legislation was to control e___________. In this case particularly, it was to control anger and violence and the desire to get revenge.
the scribes and Pharisees, in typical legalistic fashion, deduced that in every case this “eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth” philosophy was to be the norm.
They ignored the fact that Moses had also said, “"Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself: I am the LORD."
This passage is not to be taken outside of the context that it is found in... Remember that it was to the same people that have been addressed in the beatitudes.... those who were poor in spirit, ect.
