246: World Champs Week 1
Sean Quilty, Olympian and international representative at multiple world championships and Commonwealth Games with personal bests of 1:02:16 in the half marathon and 2:13:32 in the marathon passed away on Saturday 16th July 2022 after a long battle with cancer. Sean is also remembered as a lifetime athlete, and prominent figure of the Victorian Athletic League.

World Athletics Championships in Eugene saw a lot of strong performances from plenty of Aussies, starting with the Women’s 1500m where at the time of recording Georgia Griffith & Jessica Hull advanced to final while Linden Hall faced a fast semifinal to finish 4:04.65
Amy Cashin posted a 6 second PB of 9:21.46 to move to 4th on the All-Time list of Women’s 3000m Steeplechase, narrowly missing advancing to the final. Cara Feain-Ryan ran 9:43.41 and Brielle Erbacher ran 9:40.55 in their respective heats.

In the Men's 1500m Heats Matt Ramsden ran 3:39.83, while Oli Hoare made it to the semi final in 3:38.36. Stewart McSweyn marked a near complete return to form as he progressed to the final, running 3:35.07 in the semi final.
In the 3000m Steeplechase Heats, Ed Trippas ran 8:23.83 while Ben Buckingham posted 8:29:15.
Jack Rayner placed 19th with 28:24.12 in the 10000m as Joshua Cheptegei defended his title from Doha. Jack will go again in 5000m later in the week.

Other races discussed were Women’s 10000m won by Letesenbet Gidey of Ethiopia and the Men’s Marathon won by Tamirat Tola also of Ethiopia in a Championship Record.

Kenyan Marathoner Lawrence Cherono and 800m runner Nijel Amos of Botswana provisionally suspended after positive doping results ahead of World Championships.

Aths NSW 4x4km Road Relays won by Randwick Botany in the Women’s Division with the fastest time of the day run by Holly Campbell in 12:55, while UTS Norths took out the Men’s Division lead by Ed Goddard’s quickest leg of the day in 11:19.
