There is no other way to deal with Covid in a society like ours than to impose a lockdown, head of Epidemiology & Communicable Diseases of Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) Dr Raman Gangakhedkar tells ThePrint’s national affairs editor Jyoti Malhotra. India, he said, has done much better in this initial wave than countries like the US, France, Italy etc, because India learnt from China to limit human interaction and restrict travel, which is why we have been able to avoid the peak of the illness so far. He said he hoped the lessons in health literacy would be permanent. “Why should this virus tell me I have to invest more in the health sector,” Dr Gangakhedkar asked.
