Milton Friedman was certainly a brilliant free market economist, but one of his most telling insights was the quip that “Nothing is so permanent as a temporary government program.”

You can take it to the bank that President Obama will prove the truth of that adage with the “temporary” suspension of deportation for millions of illegal aliens that he announced last night.

While emphasizing his “temporary” permission for these aliens to stay legally in this country, the President is also clearing them for work permits. They will be able to get social security cards that have no expiration date. Such credentials are the gateway to green cards, citizenship and voting rights.

Congress has the power to prevent the latest “temporary government program” from becoming a permanent disaster for America by defunding it now.
