I met Quenette Walton, PhD when I was a freshman at the University of Michigan and she was a sophomore. We finished our undergraduate degrees and then were in contact sparingly until we reconnected this year (2016) while both living in California. She had completed her PhD at the University of Illinois and was continuing her research, teaching and seeing clients while pursuing her post-doc at UCLA.
To connect with Quenette:
* Two books she suggested: In and Out of Our Right Minds: The Mental Health of African American Women by Diane R Brown and Verna M Keith and Shifting: The Double Lives of Black Women in America by Charisse Jones and Kumea Shorter-Gooden, PhD.
* Behind the Mask of the Strong Black Woman
Whitney and I went through a yoga teacher training together in 2014. She has since developed a program called Yoga E-Motion which trains certified yoga teachers to be aware of a multitude of issues their students may be experiencing so that they can learn to direct them to appropriate resources and community partners such as therapists, detox centers, eating disorder clinicians, substance use treatment centers, etc. She also has a private practice in which she, too, provides various evidence-based treatments such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).
