Americans were horrified to learn in the early days of the Chinese Communist Party-induced pandemic that our country is acutely dependent on China for protective gear and medicines. Now we’re discovering the PRC supplies another determinant of our public health and safety: the U.S. electric grid.

This insight flowed from an early Biden Executive Order suspending his predecessor’s directive barring the installation of foreign equipment like transformers in America’s most critical of critical infrastructures. After all, if the grid goes down and stays down for a protracted time, hundreds of millions of us will perish.

The Biden order calls for a ninety-day review of Trump’s policy. It should be renewed forthwith, but strengthened to ensure that the 300 Chinese transformers and grid-related equipment already in use by American utilities are assessed for cyber and other vulnerabilities and replaced with reliable components ASAP.
