Episode 341: Reporting Abuse of Teen & Raising Therapy Rates
Hello, friends. In this episode, I answer two questions from listeners of the podcast. The first explores what might happen after disclosing potential parental abuse as a teenager in therapy, while the second tackles feelings of guilt when moving jobs with the worry of letting your clients down as a therapist. Question 1: Hey there, I’m a teenager whos considering going to therapy. ik I desperately need it, but I’m scared that if I tell my therapist that my parents used to abuse me (and sometimes they still do) I’m gonna be taken away. Would my therapist call the police if they find out I’m living with a (potential) abuser? Question 2: Hi Dr. Duff, I’m a licensed professional counselor in Texas and I recently accepted a position at a new private practice. I will have greater opportunities at my new job and it does allow me to earn enough to make a living. Although I am excited, I can’t help but feel a sense of guilt. The fee structure will be different at my new practice and I worry that this will be a burden to my clients. Of course I am offering referrals if needed but it is hard to start over somewhere else. I will also accept insurance so this does alleviate some of the pressure. I worry that I am disappointing my clients and I worry how my transition will affect them. I would love your insight and words of wisdom. Thank you for your time! Sponsor: This episode of Hardcore Self Help is sponsored by BetterHelp. Episode 340: OCD vs Psychosis & Finding a GOOD Therapist
Hello, friends. In this episode, I answer questions on the topics of OCD with Psychosis, and finding a good therapist to work with. Question 1: Hello! I have OCD but is something that doesn’t let me pass over it. It is the fact that when my intrusive thoughts are at maximum and I try to get rid of them, my mind is full of intensity and then, at that very moment, sometimes the tv makes noices, just like a clink. I thought that this is a release of static energy in tv due to electric waves eliberated by my brain. sometimes, when my thoughts are against a person it starts sighs or cough. Once I was woke up 3 times in an hour by my intrusive thoughts and every time the tv clink ( the tv in turned off). So, the fact that some paranormal events accompanies my OCD I really think if my thought can get real. If you can give me any advice I will be grateful. Question 2: Dr Duff, I listen to your podcast and find such great comfort and information. I decided this year to focus on my mental wellbeing and have been having significant trouble finding a decent, reliable, relatable therapist. So far, I have had initial meetings with two therapists and a follow up with each. Neither matched my needs. I had an initial meeting with a third who read instructions on an exercise for the follow up and then summarily canceled the follow up. And have changed a fourth time because of scheduling difficulties. I have a long held issue with childhood trauma – raging abusive alcoholic father. Beyond bad. And have done sessions of therapy throughout my life to get through the toughest parts. But I want to work on fixing me now, not my interactions and relationships. I’m in a companionate marriage and I have to be okay with that. I have adult children who aren’t as close as I would like. I have to learn to love me. Episode 339: Can’t Find a Job With My Degree & Emotions Stuck in Therapy
Hello, friends. In this episode, I answer questions centered around the difficulty in securing the job of your dreams post University and the impact this can have on your mental health, and what to do when you feel like you’re unable or too anxious to speak your mind in therapy. Question 1: Hello! I am looking for some advice! I studied at University for 8 years of my life and ended up in the same job that I was in before I left for university. I have not been able to get a job with my degree no matter how hard I have tried. I feel like I’ve wasted all my time (and money) working my arse off for a degree, and feel as though other people who did not put in effort are well ahead of me. I am now struggling financially and mentally feeling as though I am a failure and a waste of time. I am at the point where I am willing to give up my dream job and chase an easier job so that I don’t continue down this path. What can I do in this situation? Thanks, love the podcast. Genuinely helpful xx Question 2: Hi Dr. Duff, thank you for your awesome podcast! I’m writing in because I’m too nervous to voice this to my therapist. I constantly feel like I’m living session to session. Each week I can hear a voice in my head basically counting down the days until I can go to therapy or saying “Just make it to your next session”. What confuses me is that I think what I look forward to so much is getting a chance to sit in my anxiety or sadness with someone else in the room. It’s almost like I want to have a panic attack or completely breakdown but in the end I always just end up sitting in silence for a while as he watches me think myself into a hole until I completely lose sight of anything I’ve ever wanted to talk about. Have you ever experienced something similar with a client? It feels kind of pathetic and I’m worried to admit it. Thank you for reading! Episode 337: Losing Friendships & Coping with Brain Injury
Hello, friends. In this episode, I answer questions from listeners of the podcast related to coping and moving on from past mistakes that resulted in losing your friendships, and managing the impact of brain injury on family relationships, specifically between father and daughter. Question 1: I have found your podcast extremely comforting over the last week when I went and am still in a lonely dark place, through my own actions where I made mistakes that have ended up destroying my closest friendship of 20 years and lost other friends I am wondering as a 38 year old how I can survive this new loneliness I am facing after losing my friend and another friend who I had feelings for, it’s very quiet and there have been many thoughts that have asked should or how I should continue. There is no repairing the friendship as he has explicitly told me I broke his trust and never to speak to him or his friends again. Question 2: Hi – love your podcast and believe you’ll have some good advice for this unique situation. My spouse had an internal bleed/cardiac arrest 15 years ago. We had been married 3 years and our daughter was 14 months old at the time. After a long hospital stay, he came home and I cared for him for 10 years before needing assisted living for him. He has a brain injury and is cognitively and physically challenged. Memory is a huge challenge. He has become fixated with relationships with fake people from sex websites. My daughter is aware because she has seen this activity on his phone. She does not want to visit him and doesn’t want a relationship with him. Meanwhile he asks weekly when we are coming to see him. My daughter doesn’t want to talk to a therapist. How do I help her understand this brain injured version of her dad is not who he was and that he was a great person prior to 2008? How do I meet her needs and know where to push her and where to sit back and let her dictate when and if she sees him? Thank you for any insight you can share.
