Return to Masculinity | ELLIOTT HULSE
With regards to being a man, it seems to me that society has watered down and diluted the definition of masculinity. And, although we may not consciously realize it, the shift from “capable man” – strong, bold, courageous, and proficient – to something else entirely has impacted the way we show up in our lives. Today, I am joined by the one and only Elliott Hulse to talk about that societal shift and how they’ve influenced our thoughts and actions. We talk about why boys and men need to be initiated, the importance of the Patriarchy, how hierarchies serve men effectively, and why we need to return to masculinity. Elliott Hulse Today I am joined by a man I know a lot of you follow, Mr. Elliot Hulse. I’ve been following Elliott for some time now and after dozens and dozens of requests to get him on the podcast, I reached out and made it happen. Elliott is a strength and conditioning coach and built up much of his reputation by teaching others how to develop physical strength. But his idea of strength goes so much deeper than that and covers not only physical but mental and emotional as well. Lately, he’s been talking a lot about the demise of masculinity and how we, as men, can reclaim and become more masculine and how it would serve us well to do it. I knew this one would be interesting and unique to what we’ve done in the past. I think you’re going to enjoy it and get a lot from our conversation which, based on how it went, will be one of many more conversations. Show Highlights Why boys and men must be initiated The critical component of any masculine initiation How to spot pseudo initiations How men work best together compared to women How to increase your sexual power Why your old self must die How men can “atone to their fathers” The importance of the Patriarchy in society How to destroy your inner beta The challenges of public education for boys and men Why a man needs to heal his “inner feminine” Developing patterns for success as a man How hierarchies serve men effectively How to develop the mature masculine Why men have inappropriate relationships with their women Iron Council It’s been said that the only thing constant is change. And, if you’re anything like me, change is not easy for you. Even if we know it will be good for us, it seems to me that most men resist change. But if it’s inevitable and, in a lot of ways, constructive, we need to understand how to deal with it and actually embrace change. That’s why inside of our exclusive brotherhood, the Iron Council, we’re talking all about change and how to harness it for a force of good in our lives and in those we have a responsibility for. We’re going to to be breaking it down weekly with understanding the nature of our relationship with change, how to take action when we are faced with an evolving set of circumstances, and how to effectively lead the people we care about through change. If you’re ready to learn how to embrace change in your life, have some powerful discussion about it, and be challenged to take deliberate and intentional action toward growing and evolving, I invite you to band with us inside the Iron Council. How to Invest, the Right Way | DR. DANIEL CROSBY
If building wealth was simply about math, we’d all be independently wealthy because we all know how to add and subtract. Seeing as how we’re not all independently wealthy, there must be something else at play. And, it might surprise you to know that it’s you that has the potential to become your own worst enemy. Today, I’m joined by repeat guest, Dr. Daniel Crosby to talk about human psychology and why it hinders your ability to build the level of wealth you’re after. We cover how your behavior dictates investing success, how our physiology and psychology work against us, how a “contrarian mindset” will help us succeed, and how to invest – the right way. “Things that have served us well evolutionarily, serve us poorly when it comes to dealing with money.” Tweet That— Daniel Crosby Daniel Crosby Today I am joined by repeat guest, Dr. Daniel Crosby. He is a trained psychologist, behavioral finance expert, and asset manager. Specifically, he studies market psychology to understand the nature of why we do what we do and how it impacts our ability to invest successfully in financial markets. He is a New York Times Bestselling Author and his ideas have made him a critical voice and expert in the financial community. As a former financial advisor myself, I’ve been connected with Dr. Crosby for years and have applied many of his ideas and teachings into my previous financial practice. He brings a unique and refreshing perspective to building wealth and one that has the potential to help you finally invest successfully. “Investment management is one of those disciplines that doesn’t lend itself to innovation. If it’s innovative, it’s likely to be scammy.” Tweet That— Daniel Crosby Show Highlights How behavior dictates investing success 3 traits all investment strategies must posses How a contrarian mindset could improve your investment portfolio How to balance logic and emotion in investing How financial markets help you keep score in your life Why overestimating our abilities hinders performance How good behavior can be expensive but necessary The power of a financial coach How “hedonic adaptation” keeps us from being happy with more money How “action bias” hurts our portfolios How our social nature has created incredible amounts of wealth How our physiology and psychology can work against us How noise and chaos is our enemy and how to tune it out The need to overcome arrogance and ego in investing Why “rule-based behavioral investing” is so powerful The Behavioral Investor “If you want to be an exceptional investor, you need two things: you need to take a contrarian position and you need to be right.” Tweet That— Daniel Crosby Iron Council One of the first things to go for a man when he gets busy with a wife, family, and career is himself, his hobbies, and his growth. I completely understand and fell into this trap early into my marriage and career as well. But what I found out is that the less I took care of myself, the less capable I was of taking care of myself and others I had a responsibility for. This is why our exclusive brotherhood, the Iron Council, is so powerful. When you band with the 500 of us inside the Iron Council, you’ll give yourself the tools, resources, and connections you need to make yourself a success. And, one of the best parts about the Iron Council is that you can engage on your time, so you’re not cutting into other important obligations and priorities. If you want to learn more about what we’re doing and make powerful connections and unlock the tools you need to make yourself a priority, visit www.orderofman.com/ironcouncil to learn more and lock in your spot. “For a very long time, the world of financial services emphasized salesmanship to the detriment of clients.” Tweet That— Daniel Crosby Connect with Daniel Crosby Twitter LinkedIn “People don’t need more information. Politically Incorrect | CHAD PRATHER
If you’re anything like me, you’re fed up with the noise and nonsense we see in mainstream and social media. It seems that everywhere we turn and with everything we say, people are looking for reasons to be upset and/or offended. My guest today does not allow that to back him down or dictate the conversations he wants to have on some very important subjects everyone else is too afraid to talk about, from sexual orientation, religion, masculinity, politics and just about every other topic we’re “not supposed to talk about.” His name is Chad Prather and, today, we talk about our responsibility to speak up, calling boys into manhood, the rise of the victim culture, and the power of being politically incorrect. “We’re cursing ourselves with irresponsibility. And, what happens is we’re raising a generation that’s twice as irresponsible as us.” Tweet That— Chad Prather Chad Prather My guest today is a man that won’t need an introduction for a lot of you. His name is Chad Prather and you may know him as the political cowboy. But just in case you don’t already know, Chad is a comedian and a political commentator willing to discuss (and have some fun with) some of the most polarizing topics in society today. He’s been entertaining people on TV as early at 6 years old and hasn’t let up since. He’s been featured on Fox News, A&E, CNN, MSN, and The Blaze. In fact, he’s everywhere. So much so that I can list all the things he’s up to. That said, I’m excited to have had the chance to sit down and talk with someone who I admire for not only his perspective and his interesting approach to sharing it but his willingness to do so in an environment that seems to be increasingly wanting to shut down these types of conversations. “We’ve gotten to a point in our culture where we can’t have a conversation anymore. Everything has to be an argument.” Tweet That— Chad Prather Show Highlights The power of political incorrectness Our responsibility to speak up How to become a more effective communicator The rise of the “victim culture” The delusion of social media Overcoming the vocal minority The danger of identity politics Calling boys into manhood Losing the ability to connect face-to-face Learning to be satisfied but not content The power of storytelling Re-orienting a generation of weak people Developing a vision Taking risks Fostering courage and confidence “We’re getting to a point where we have confused reality with social media and people have gotten very awkward with each other.” Tweet That— Chad Prather Iron Council The Iron Council is a powerful band of brothers all working together to make a difference in the lives of the men inside. This month we’re talking all about the concept of being a lighthouse in your family, business, and community. And, to that end, we have all of our members complete assignments and worksheets, participate in challenges, and hold each other accountable to our most pressing concerns and objectives. If you feel like you’ve been in a holding pattern for any amount of time – knowing that you want more out of life and your performance – the Iron Council represents the jolt, or jumpstart you’ll need to get yourself on a different, more successful track. The truth is, men need to surround themselves with other men. The Iron Council represents the opportunity and framework to do just that. Minimize Your Digital Use, Maximize your Life | CAL NEWPORT
There is no question that we are increasingly committing ourselves to digital use. The fact is that our use of digital technology has presented us with some opportunities never before available in the history of mankind. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t pose a very serious threat to our sanity and well-being. Today, I talk with repeat guest, Cal Newport, to talk about some of those threats and, more importantly, how we harness the power of digital technology while minimizing the risk that inherently comes with it. We talk about the philosophy of digital minimalism, why you ought to consider a “digital de-clutter,” how to keep from losing control to technology, and how to minimize digital use while maximizing your life. “It was the social media companies in particular that re-engineered our relationship with these [technilogical] devices.”— Cal Newport Cal Newport Gentlemen, today I have the honor of introducing you to my friend and repeat guest, Mr. Cal Newport. Cal is an MIT graduate and a professor of computer science at Georgetown University and, in addition to that, he is extremely interested in the intersection of technology and society. I know many of you have read his books, including, So Good They Can’t Ignore you, Deep Work, and his latest New York Times Bestseller, Digital Minimalism. I’ve been fascinated with his work since I first read, So Good They Can’t Ignore you. In fact, many of his theories and ideas have been used in my life to build this movement, Order of Man. I’m not sure I would have had so much success with the organization without incorporating some of his ideas, including the ones he’ll be sharing with us today. “There is nothing about the internet, or smartphones, or the value you can get out of these tools, that requires you to need to be looking at these screens all the time.”— Cal Newport Show Highlights What is digital minimalism How to develop a philosophy of technology use How to incorporate a digital de-clutter Why you should place priority on long-term meaning over short-term satisfaction How we lose control to technology Why technology is not neutral Why clutter is costly How to develop a personal technology process How we’re beginning to see mental health issues associated with technology use Strategies for overcoming digital addiction How tech. companies capitalize on the “attention economy” Why social approval is so compelling, even if we know the dangers Why real-world interaction is so much more powerful than digital interaction Why every man needs to strategize his free time How to utilize the idea of “slow media” in your life “We’re just gadgets. We’re gadgets in the machine of some northern California corporation. I think people are getting fed up.”— Cal Newport Iron Council Gentlemen, it’s been a while since I last talked about our exclusive brotherhood, the Iron Council. In talking with hundreds and hundreds of men, one of their biggest challenges in improving themselves is finding other motivated, ambitious men to connect with who are interested in walking the same path. I ran into the same issue on my early journey to improve my life which is why I created the Iron Council – so I could identify and band with men who had similar ambitions as I did, and men who would hold me accountable for the aspirations I had for myself. If you’re interested in the same, the Iron Council is a brotherhood where you’ll bond with other men, complete assignments and challenges, identify worthy objectives, and hold each other accountable to achieving them. This month we’re talking about the “lighthouse” theory and how you can become a man of value in your home, business, and community. Head to www.orderofman.com/ironcouncil to learn more and band with us. “The minimalist credo is to figure out what you’re all about – figure out your values – and work backward from that. And, only put tech to use if it helps one of those values.”— Cal Newport Connect with Cal Newport www.calnewport.com “The value of taking responsibility and committing to things you care about will far outweigh the inconveniences or little bits of lost value by not taking on everything that catches your attention.”— Cal Newport The post Minimize Your Digital Use, Maximize your Life | CAL NEWPORT appeared first on Order of Man.
Pay Your Dues | SAL FRISELLA
Every single one of us has to start somewhere. When we look at the guys at the top, however, it’s easy for us to jump to the conclusion that they’ve always been there. What we fail to see is the years of toil, effort, and struggle that those men at the top endured along the way. Today, I am joined by Sal Frisella, who does a little bit of everything at 1stPhorm from running the organization to sweeping the floors. Today, he’s here to talk with us about where he started, how he had to restart along the way, playing the long-game, how to create a culture of winning, and why everyone needs to pay their dues. “Not everybody is designed to lead but everybody wants to be part of a winning organization.” Tweet That— Sal Frisella Sal Frisella My guest today is none other than, Mr. Sal Frisella. He is the VP of Operations for 1stPhorm, one of the largest muscle and nutritional supplement suppliers. But, when I asked him about his title, he explained to me that he doesn’t really use that title because he does a little of everything, from running the organization to sweeping the floors. And, after visiting the 1st Phorm headquarters personally, I can tell you that is true. After he faced a gruesome injury on his track to become a professional baseball player, he had to rethink his approach to life and create something new entirely. That’s when he started in the early years of 1stPhorm with his brother, Andy Frisella. Gents, you’re going to love this episode. I’m inspired every day by this guy and you will be too. “Men of character are built.” Tweet That— Sal Frisella Show Highlights Why not everyone is designed to lead How to build people of character How to create an incredible culture How to enforce an organization’s core values The importance of accountability at every level of an organization How to be more direct with people The power of “tough love” When it’s okay to be selfish Focusing on the long-game over the short-game Why we all need to pay our dues How physical fitness makes you a more effective leader Getting better at saying, ‘no’ Fully stepping into our obligations Why everyone needs a dream How the mantra, “right foot, left foot” will help you win “A big problem with society now is accountability. Everybody wants to blame others for all of their problems.” Tweet That— Sal Frisella Legacy If you’ve been listening for any amount of time, you know that I believe it’s no surprise that our boys are facing an uphill battle. In fact, if you look at the statistics, you can clearly see that boys are falling behind on some very serious and alarming metrics from academics, to depression and suicide, drug abuse, violence, criminal activity, college rates, and income to name a few. If you’re a father of a boy between the ages of 8-15, we want to equip you with the tools you’ll need to usher your son into manhood. And, that’s exactly what we’re doing at our second Legacy Experience on April 11th-14th, 2019. All you have to do is get to Las Vegas with your son and we’ll take care of the rest from food and transportation to an array of physical, mental, and emotional challenges all designed to push and test both of you, forge deeper connections, and help your son go from boy to man.
