Lean In 42: Consciousness Rising; Stepping boldly into the full expression of yourself with Nadine McNeil
Welcome to Lean In, a podcast that explores ordinary people’s extraordinary lives through honest storytelling. My guests share with me their journey of discovery, laughter, personal experiences and healing. If you are going through a change or challenging period in life, Lean In is the space where we can surrender to the cycle together. “We are all in the same storm, but we are not all in the same boat” this quote struck me from my conversation with todays guest Nadine McNeil as we were talking about the current global climate – pandemic, racial protests, war, refugee’s and everything else that we are dealing with currently. Despite what’s happening in our external environments it is absolutely crucial that we continue to do our own inner work, so that we can become the catalyst for collective change. Or as Nadine puts it “self love is the most radical form of activism right now”. Nadine McNeil, MA, is a yogini, humanitarian, transformation coach, and storyteller. Nadine’s career with the United Nations guided her towards yoga nearly 15 years ago as a necessary tool for self-care while serving in volatile areas of conflict. And now as a global yoga teacher and change maker her central message is “Consciousness Rising” – the act of stepping boldly into the fullest expression of self, thereby becoming a catalyst for collective change. Nadine presents at international conferences such as the BaliSpirit Festival and the Caribbean Yoga Conference, leads corporate workshops at companies and teaches at yoga studios across the globe. She also implements a variety of programs, classes and workshops for underserved populations, with past projects in the United States, Jamaica, Haiti and Africa, contributing, for example, to organizations such as the Africa Yoga Project. There are so many juicy elements to this conversation, get ready to bask in Nadine’s potent wisdom that comes through. We dive into; ● Growing up in Jamaica and how those roots have shaped her life ● The essence of being Jamaican that allows Nadine to share her pride and hold herself in a way that shows the world who she is ● How Nadine started working with the UN and what she learnt during her time there for over 15 years ● Exploring the “weight of her blessings’ during her emergency response and logistics in countries whilst working with the UN ● Knowing what our personal drivers are and being aware of them ● How a breakdown and burnout led Nadine to come to Bali and take an inventory of her internal world and what was important to her ● Teaching yoga in the ruble and trauma post Haiti earthquakes. How crucial breath is when we are going through a crisis of any scale. ● The healing potency of meditation and journaling ● How Nadine started incorporating yoga into her life and the changes it brought for her mind, body, soul ● The transition from part time yogi to world class yoga teacher ● Why yoga is “the way to the way” ● Self Love is THE MOST radical act of activism we can do right now ● Why we need to be the voice for the people that cannot use their own ● The self love journey and how we can stay committed to the path of honouring oneself You can find out more about Nadine and her incredible work; Nadine McNeil Instagram And…. Lean In 39: Survival. One brave man’s unbelievable story of survival with Abdi Aden
Today I have the extreme pleasure of introducing you to someone who has experienced the unbelievable and conquered the impossible; Abdi Aden. Abdi’s world completely changed when he was only a very young teenager and Somalia’s vicious civil war hit Mogadishu. Unable to find his family after a massive explosion happened, he fled quickly and soon joined another 318 people heading to Kenya to search for safety. On the way, death squads hunted them and they daily faced violence, danger and starvation. After almost three months, they arrived at a refugee camp in Kenya – of the group he’d set out with, only five had survived. All alone in the world and desperate to find his family, Abdi couldn’t stay in Kenya, so he turned around and undertook the dangerous journey back to Mogadishu. But the search was fruitless, and eventually Abdi made his way – alone, with no money in his pockets – to a refugee camp in Romania, then got to Germany, completely dependent on the kindness of strangers. He was just sixteen years old when he arrived in Melbourne. He had no English, no family or friends, no money, no home. Yet, against the odds, he not only survived, he thrived. Abdi went on to complete secondary education and later university. He is now a husband, a father to 3 boys and constantly gives back to his community. He became a youth worker, was acknowledged with the 2007 Victorian Refugee Recognition Award and was featured in the SBS second series of Go Back to Where You Came From. Despite what he has gone through, Abdi is a most inspiring man, who is constantly thankful for his life and what he has. Everything he has endured and achieved is testament to his quiet strength and courage, his resilience and most of all, his warm-hearted, shining and enduring optimism. We dive into; ● The reality of Somalia in the civil war ● The Mother that took Abdi under her wing when he could not find his own family ● Facing a death squad…and surviving! ● The constant search for his parents and sister ● Arriving in Romania in the freezing cold with no where to go, no language and no money ● The reality of living in refugee camps ● His long journey to Australia and how he got there ● The racism refugee’s face in Australia ● The story of getting into school and eventually university ● How he miraculously found his Mother and sister ● Meeting his Australian wife and having children ● The importance of giving back and sharing his story You can find out more about Abdi and his incredible work; Website/blog Books Instagram Facebook And…. Lean In 38: Acceptance; It is perfectly ok to not be ok with Clare Boyd
Welcome to Lean In, a podcast that explores ordinary people’s extraordinary lives through honest storytelling. My guests share with me their journey of discovery, laughter, personal experiences and healing. If you are going through a change or challenging period in life or just want a deeper level conversation, Lean In is the space where we can surrender to the cycle together. Acceptance is something we will all have to experience at some point within our own lives. On the healing journey it is an absolute allay that provides so much space and expansion for our minds and souls. Acceptance of self, acceptance of what has happened to us, acceptance of the present circumstances. The healing journey is not always an easy to go through process. Quite often we can feel like we are dredging through the dark hallways of pain, loneliness and despair without a light in sight. It can be hard, really, really hard! And that is exactly what I talk with my guest, Clare Boyd, about today. Clare Boyd is a certified yoga and meditation teacher, intuitive healer, somatic stress response body work facilitator, kinesiology student. Through the energetic pathways and movement of the body Clare has found a way to dive deeper within herself; and her clients. She believes that to make this world a better place and live from a more empowered state, you must first take care of yourself and embody all parts of you. And in this episode she shares her unique and intimate experience with trauma and long term illness. In this episode we dive into; ● Growing up in Australia and the impact nature (ocean) has on mental health ● Being a shy kid and how we take on other people’s perceptions of our own personalities ● A tragic accident that left Clare with a severely fractured skull, broken bones and deformed face ● The miracle of healing that occurred within her body ● How we process trauma in different ways, on different timelines according to our own body’s innate intelligence ● The nature of stored trauma experiences when they get “stored” inside our bodies ● How healing is an ongoing multi layered process ● Clares experience with chronic illness and the impact it had on her mental health ● Navigating the “in between” stages of healing and how it can feel like nothing is getting better ● Why it is ok not to be ok ● How self acceptance is a fundamental aspect of getting better ● What recovery looks like and how do we know if things are working? ● Why it is so important to feel what needs to be expressed through us in exchange for healing. You can find out more about Clare and work with her here; Natural Instinct Healing Retreats The Holistic Path The Health and Healing Hub Instagram And as mentioned in this episode…. Clare is co-hosting an immersive one day event on August 1st 2020 in Brisbane, Australia. This event is to restore yourself through physical embodiment, emotional nourishment and spiritual alignment. Through yoga, meditation, ritual, workshops and food we will meet, move, nourish, journey, rise, root, remember and celebrate the gift of living in unity. Find out more here.
