Episode 3 (part 2) With Delores Simmons
Today we have a very special 2 part visit with Delores Simmons, another 50+ year old, who is building a new experience through the vehicle of fitness. Delores has been a practicing attorney for 22 years, during which time she practiced for two years at what was then the largest law firm in Alabama. An honors graduate of Georgetown Law School, Delores spent the bulk of her legal career working as a Law Clerk for Federal judges. Sensing a need to explore other facets of herself, Delores, who also worked as a Flight Attendant for USAir on the weekends while in law school, took off two years to work in residential real estate sales as an agent. — another encore experience that allowed Delores to examine new opportunities. In the midst of this, Delores obtained her Group Fitness and Pilates Certifications In 2005. Since that time, she has added other fitness and wellness formats to her repertoire, including Bodypump, Barre Above, Spinning and Yoga. She uses her training and experience to provide individual and group training through her company Power & Poise Fitness and Wellness. She helps her clients focus on progress, power and poise rather than striving for perfection. In this episode, Delores outlines why it is important for women age 50+ to have some type of consistent exercise program. She provides concrete suggestions on what women in this age cohort can do to keep their muscles supple, their mental clarity sharp and their well being intact. She also provides some nutrition pointers. The icing on the cake — Delores addresses specific things that African American women can do to enhance their physical stamina. WHAT IS CRITICAL TO DELORES Part of prioritizing a regular out for busy people is planning. Delores recommends mapping out a Wellness Schedule for the upcoming week on every Sunday. This makes physical activity a non-negotiable! WHY? 1. This way it can only be moved or missed if something occurs that is far more important than your workout (like a sick child or partner); 2. Even when you feel tired or not really into it, go anyway. Just show up! You won't regret it. Lastly, find an accountability partner like a trainer or friend. Real talk, ladies, for those age 50+
