Sarah Stelmach-Brown: A Caregiver’s Perspective on Healthcare

In this episode we hear a caregiver’s perspective on healthcare from Sarah Stelmach-Brown. She joined the Perspectives on Healthcare Podcast with Rob Oliver from Connecticut. Sarah has a long history in healthcare, starting at 16 years old. She is a CNA with experience in facilities, a homecare and, most recently, autism. Sarah is a member of the Millennial Generation (Generation Y.)

Here are 3 things that stood out as Sarah Stelmach-Brown gave us a caregiver’s perspective on healthcare:

· The isolation that caregivers often face as they take care of the people that they love. Respite care is hard to come by.
· Meeting an individual’s physical needs is the base level of care. There also needs to be a level of emotional connection. People need to be cared for physically, emotionally and spiritually.
· As a community, we can create environments that are welcoming to all community members. Think about an Alzheimer’s friendly grocery store or a restaurant where parents are not judged when their children have outbursts.
