Side Effects of BPH Treatment: Why Rezum, Alpha-Blockers Aren't Right For Everyone
Thanks for tuning in to the Armor Men’s Health Hour Podcast today, where we bring you the latest and greatest in urology care and the best urology humor out there.
In this segment, Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee answer a question from a listener who had 12 steam vapor injections as part of his Rezum treatment for an 80 gram prostate. While his goal was to shrink his prostate and stop taking tamsulosin for urinary urgency, he has discovered that 3 months into his recovery, he still needs the tamsulosin and often struggles with urgency symptoms. He wonders whether he is still recovering and his condition might yet improve, but if not, what treatments he should consider to avoid the side effects he experiences with tamsulosin. Dr. Mistry explains that not all BPH patients are good candidates for Rezum, especially patients with very large prostates. Although there are many side effects from long term use of alpha-blocker BPH medications like tamsulosin, another class of drug with fewer side effects is often used for patients who are only experiencing isolated urgency symptoms. Medications in this class include Myrbetriq, Gemtesa, Oxybutynin, and Vesicare. For this listener, Dr. Mistry suggests stopping tamsulosin and instead trying one of these alternatives to combat urinary urgency without dealing with the side effects of alpha-blockers. Regardless of what symptoms are troubling you or the person you love, our holistic approach to urology means that we help patients decide what their best treatment options are based on their unique symptoms as well as their lifestyle needs.
