#14 A Candid Conversation about Systemic Racism with Brenda Johnson
This was another very engaging and informative conversation! Thank you Brenda Kaye Johnson for joining us again this evening!
In honor of Black History Month we welcomed guest Brenda Kaye Johnson. Brenda identifies as a Black woman and has been co-writing her first novel as a with an inmate, Xavier Zane, imprisoned for over thirty years for a crime he did not commit.
Brenda Kaye is a retired United States Army Reserve Officer. After leaving military service she home schooled her son and daughter for five years while working part time, starting a business and volunteering within her community. The business, CreativEdge Enterprises competed and won two franchise locations within the Philadelphia International Airport, an Edy’s Ice Cream and Pizzeria Uno. Prior to opening the locations, they were sold for a substantial profit. At the same time returning to part time military training, she attended Command and General Staff College at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Brenda Kaye attended California Polytechnic State University as a Speech Communications major and completed her Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Communications at Excelsior College.
Jodi Lewis is the Legal Director of a Non-Profit agency advocating for survivors of domestic violence. She has been a practicing attorney for over 13 years and cares deeply for civil rights issues and those affected by injustices caused by racism, sexism and classism. Jodi has also worked with community members, legislators and officials to make changes in the justice system so to positively affect survivors and their families.
As a Heart-String Healer and Joy Coach, Misha also empowers women, specifically but not limited to, her LGBTQ Womxn clients to tune their heart-strings so to better align with their true selves which results in living life and thriving rather than just surviving it, feeling more authentic and wholehearted joy on a daily basis as well as building a community of people in their lives which feels healthy!
A challenging time calls for a joy practice which includes a loving compassionate community to keep us grounded.
Misha raised five children, has a graduate degree, is trilingual (English, French & Spanish) and has 30+ years of teaching experience. She is a great listener, compassionate, perceptive, playful, an empath, a highly sensitive person and authentic. Misha identifies as a lesbian womxn, a mom, a daughter, a friend, a sister, a partner, an educator and an anti-racist activist. And, Misha is a singer & songwriter creating music to help soothe her own inner wounds and using it to light up the hearts of others!
