Episode 44 Michelle Sanchez From San Antonio to The Invictus Games
Growing up in a family of hunters, it wasn't until Michelle Sanchez returned from Iraq in 2005 that her father presented her with a .25-06 Smith and Wesson and invited her to join him on the ranch. A cousin then persuaded her into buying a bow which led to a first place finish in a local bowfishing tournament. Things snowballed from there and before long, Sanchez found herself shooting competitively across The Lone Star State and she quickly discovered the therapeutic benefits of archery. Within a year, she would become a state champion, a feat that she would accomplish three times, now completely hooked on the sport.
A decade later, an opportunity presented itself to qualify for The Department of Defense Warriors Games in Chicago. An adaptive Olympics designed to rehabilitate wounded Veterans and active members of the Armed Forces, Melissa would participate in several sports. It was there that I had the privilege to meet her and see her compete in person, being the only woman to finish in the top 8 of the archery division.
The Army Veteran took that accomplishment one step further and to another continent in 2022, representing the United States at The Invictus Games in The Netherlands. Able to reunite with some of her former teammates and make new friends from around the world, Sanchez again came home with metals, memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.
Not only a competition shooter but a bowhunter as well, she is passionate about mentoring the next generation in her home state and hopes one day to do that full time. Having overcome significant hurdles and the darkness of her past , Sanchez has an infectious positivity to her. While still prone to bad days now and again, she has found an escape behind a stick and string and is an inspiration to anyone looking for a healthy outlet to combat their own personal struggles. Her story is an inspiring one and we are honored to have her as part of the HHA family!
