Holmes settled in comfortably in Chicago, he was well liked, he was charismatic, intelligent and fun to be around, nobody had a bad word to say about him. He worked hard and saved his money, his family was an inconvenience and he sent very little back to his wife Clara and their son Robert. In 1887, 2 years after arriving in Chicago Holmes bought the empty lot across the road from the drugstore that he worked at.
