When Samira Yama was escaping The Taliban she was forced to cover herself with a burqa. In an act of defiance she’s taken the fabric of her burqas and transformed them into party dresses. Samira is one of a handful of Afghan-Australian fashion designers whose work is on display in an exhibition at The Newcastle Library.
Inspired by the protest movement #DoNotTouchMyClothes that saw Afghan women around the world post online photos of their traditional colourful clothing, the exhibition highlights the diversity, beauty and ingenuity of Afghan clothing design through the ages.
