Arthritis is a family of diseases that cause pain and swelling in the joints. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are two common forms of arthritis. Worldwide, gout is currently the most common form of inflammatory arthritis. Gout happens when uric acid, a normal body waste, gets too high in the blood. Uric acid comes from the breakdown of purines, which are chemicals found in both our diet and our bodies. In some people, high uric acid may turn into crystals that settle in the joints, and it is these crystals that result in pain and swelling.
