When Deion Sanders was asked about Colorado’s five-star cornerback Cormani McClain, he responded with a brutally honest answer. 'Coach Prime' tried to soften the edges of his critique by saying, “I’m old school.” Jason is “old school” too and doesn’t take issue with the harsh review of the freshman’s season. It’s the kind thing that Indiana’s Bobby Knight would have said in his heyday, but therein lies the issue. Many reporters and pundits blasted Knight for his bully tactics. No one feared criticizing Bob Knight and his old-school, military methods of motivation. You weren’t called racist or a sellout for publicly questioning Knight’s coaching style. However, don’t give Deion his flowers three games into his first season, and you’re an Uncle Tom. “Deion Sanders exists in a protective bubble where he’s shielded from the kind of fair criticism Bobby Knight endured throughout his career. Deion has black elite, celebrity privilege. Racial idolatry blinds us from seeing what’s obvious. A white coach throwing an 18-year-old black freshman under the bus would be criticized. Deion was praised for it.
