Robert James is a coach who specializes in helping people overcome debilitating anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
I've thrown the term "OCD" around without really knowing what it is. Like a lot of people, I pictured compulsive hand-washing or counting steps or touching banisters - stuff you see on TV and in movies - but didn't really understand the variety of OCD symptoms nor the thinking that underlies their necessity.
Robert shared his own journey and how he found relief and ultimately healing through acceptance, mindfulness, and exposure. And how he offers these simple yet powerful tools to his clients to allow them to escape from the clutches of a mind that's so focused on avoidance that its world contracts to unbearability.
We also talked about how OCD is an extreme form of one of modern civilization's obsessions - comfort at all times and under all conditions - and how we can learn from those who have danced with that obsession to the very edge of their being, and returned with lessons and gifts for the rest of us.
