Michelle talks with Ryan Huffman, from family-owned Huffman's Market in Upper Arlington (OH).
“The last thing I ever wanted to be was a grocer..but I started seeing the people involved.”
“We built the business on people…for the community.”
Being a family-owned and run business… “Work is work, family is family. We don’t have too may disagreements. He’s still my father at the end of the day.”
Their philosophy on customer service… “Customer service has always been a big part of our business. We’ve never had a customer complain about us asking too many times how their day is, or if they are finding everything alright.”
“Simplicity of our business if an advantage for us. We can get all those things the big guys do, so we order things specifically for customers when they ask for it.”
Offering local product is important… “We buy as close to home as possible…help your neighbors, and they will help you.”
On challenges from competition… “We try to use our resources. We network so much, we know so many people in every realm.”
Why long-standing small businesses succeed… “There’s a simplicity that these larger organizations are overthinking.”
