Many people have established lucrative side hustles to supplement their everyday jobs – but when cybersecurity workers moonlight as cyber criminals, you know you’ve got a problem. The Chartered Institute of Information Security recently enlisted a former police officer and covert operative to trawl dark web job listings for six months, and found many ads from people claiming to be current or former tech and cybersecurity workers at global software agencies, AI training firms, web development houses, and penetration testing companies. All were selling their skills for developing cybercrime tools including chatbots, hacking frameworks, phishing campaigns, scripting and backend software. An out-of-work voiceover artist was even offering to serve as the voice of vishing, or voice phishing, campaigns.
