Will psychedelic assisted therapy become more accessible?
It is nine months since changes to Therapeutic Goods Administration rules have enabled psychiatrists to treat patients for treatment resistant depression and PTSD using therapy augmented by psychedelic drugs.
Yet since that time, it is believed only a handful of treatments have taken place, and only nine psychiatrists have been registered to administer treatment using MDMA or Psilocybin. Meanwhile, this therapy is currently costing more than $20,000 per patient.
Those researching and providing clinical treatment believe it will become more accessible, and affordable, but only when stronger evidence of its effectiveness emerges.
