One of the biggest risks associated with gestational diabetes is your baby being born with low blood sugar. The risk of this is increased when your own blood sugar is high, as it means that your baby is being transferred excess sugar through the placenta, and they compensate for this by producing a lot of insulin so that they can keep their own blood sugar levels regulated.
When bub is born, the supply of sugar gets cut off, but because their bodies have adapted to high levels of circulating sugar, they continue producing too much insulin. This can drop their blood sugar dangerously low.
In this episode we cover what to eat both throughout your pregnancy and during labour to minimise the risk of your baby having low blood sugar levels after birth. My goal is for you to feel well informed, prepared and equipped with ideas of how you can have the best chance of bringing your gorgeous little bub happily and healthily into the world.
