In September 2008, Russ was playing golf with a friend when he received the news that the Dow Jones Industrial Average had dropped 880 points. This moment was a wake-up call for Russ, who had been a Certified Financial Planner and believed in the expertise of Wall Street. He realized that the financial markets were unpredictable, and the experts he had trusted had no idea what was happening. This experience led Russ to seek out a new mentor, Nelson Nash, who introduced him to the concept of becoming his own banker and building wealth outside of the traditional financial system.

Russ and his business partner emphasize the importance of a three-step process to achieve financial freedom: goal, plan, and support. One of the most valuable lessons Russ learned came from his experience leading clients into a billion-dollar Ponzi scheme. He realized the importance of verifying trust through due diligence, rather than relying solely on reputation or recommendations. Russ also learned that reputation is more important than riches, and he took responsibility for his mistake by paying back every client who lost money in the scheme.
